The recent divorce between Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise has taken the nation’s attention, as we have written about on this blog. Celebrity watchers are fascinated with the child custody agreements that the two parties have come up with for their daughter Suri. Some of the stories have been particularly harsh, questioning Cruise’s ability as a parent.

Cruise has recently released a public statement refuting the accusations that he has abandoned his daughter. One magazine, Life and Style, recently featured a cover photo of Suri with a caption stating, “Abandoned by her Dad.” The actor’s attorney has publicly issued statements on behalf of Tom Cruise.

In a recent interview with CNN, the attorney said it was out of bounds for the tabloids to continue reporting on the divorce between Cruise and Holmes. The two superstars decided on an amicable agreement for child visitation and custody rights several weeks ago now; Holmes will retain full custody of Suri Cruise.

The case of Cruise and Holmes reveals the importance of having an advocate in the form of legal counsel. It is important for men particularly to have an someone on their side who understands fathers’ rights.

In states such as Missouri, a father is entitled to be able to see his child after a divorce. Unfortunately, many fathers in Missouri and elsewhere end up getting the short end of the stick when it comes to child custody and visitation. In order to change that, divorcing dads need to make sure that their legal rights are strongly represented.
