With the winter weather advisory that has overcome a large portion of the Midwest during the last few weeks of late fall 2016; a whole host of car crashes have resulted from negligent drivers driving recklessly despite the hazardous roadways. To that end, on Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, at least 300 car accidents were attributed the Columbia, Missouri, area’s icy roadways alone.

Of those crashes, many caused traffic jams along I-70, Highways 54, 63 and 94, and other main thoroughfares in the city. One such victim of the prior week’s icy road situation was a 19-year-old Missouri teen who awakened from a drug-induced coma just last weekend to learn that his parents had perished en route to visit him in the hospital.

The Pittsburg, Missouri, teen had been involved in a head-on accident on U.S. 54 in Camden County on Friday, Dec. 16, 2016. Upon emergency service’s arrival on the scene, the critically injured young male was taken to University Hospital in Columbia to be treated.

That same day, as the young man’s parents were en route to visit their son in the hospital, they too were involved in a head-on collision right off of Missouri 5, just north of Lebanon. That fatal accident not only claimed the young man’s parent’s lives, but those of an Eldrige, Missouri, man and his wife as well.

As of Dec. 19, 2016, a co-worker of the victim had set up a crowdfunding site to help defray some of the costs associated with the man’s hospitalization and his parent’s funeral costs. She also took time to provide an update on the man’s condition. His condition had been upgraded to fair and he had been moved out of intensive care and was preparing for physical therapy.
