In March, former child star Jodie Sweetin and her husband, Morty Coyle, announced that the two had secretly married one year earlier. The announcement came around the time of their first anniversary. This week, Ms. Sweetin reportedly filed divorce papers in court on the West Coast, where the two reside.

The couple has a 2-year-old daughter, and Sweetin is seeking full custody of the child in the divorce. In addition to the custody issue, news reports indicate that she is seeking ownership of a 2000 Toyota Avalon.

The two apparently share a Kohl’s account, and Sweetin is seeking to split the $200 balance on the account with her estranged husband in the divorce. This reportedly is the third divorce for the former child actress. Sweetin may be best known for her role as Stephanie Tanner on the sitcom, “Full House.”

Typically, when celebrity or high profile divorces make the news, there is speculation concerning how the division of property issues may be dealt with in the divorce. There is no indication in media reports if Sweetin and her husband have any type of prenuptial agreement, or whether premarital assets exist, which would not necessarily be a part of the marital estate. But the recent story does highlight that assets are not the only issue that must be resolved in a divorce.

A divorce settlement should cover many different areas, including how debts will be handled. While the news report only covers one debt (it is not clear of that is the only debt, or the only one that caught the eye of the media), it is important for a person seeking divorce to address all forms of financial issues in the divorce.Retirement plans, division of property, debts and assets are all issues that should be considered and addressed when applicable in a divorce.

Today’s story does not arise under Missouri law, as the couple resides on the coast. However, a divorce proceeding may cover a wide variety of issues, including unraveling debts and dividing the marital property. A Columbia, Missouri, family law attorney can assist Missouri residents considering dissolution of marriage in addressing many issues that should not be overlooked in a divorce.
