Hazards for motorcyclists and their passengers, even those wearing helmets and other protective gear, are substantial. Motorcycle accidents are, unfortunately, a common occurrence throughout the summer months across the country. A recent fatal motorcycle crash near Salem, Missouri likely occurred because of another driver’s inattention.

On a recent Monday afternoon in Dent County, around 2:30 p.m., a motorcycle was headed northbound on Highway 68. The driver was a 73-year-old man and there was a 73-year-old female passenger on board. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, an eastbound truck driven by a 16-year-old male was attempting to cross the highway and came across the path of the motorcycle. The bike crashed into the passenger side of the truck.

The driver of the motorcycle was driven to a nearby hospital where, sadly, he was pronounced dead at 3:16 p.m. His female passenger was flown to a hospital to be treated for serious injuries. According to the Highway Patrol, they were both wearing helmets. The driver of the pickup was wearing his seat belt and suffered minor injuries.

Victims of motorcycle accidents in Missouri have the right to pursue a legal claim in a civil court when another party is deemed to have been negligent with regard to an accident. Motorcycle accidents that result in serious injuries or death often lead to claims for recovery of documented financial losses. Compensation from a successfully navigated lawsuit, which must be based upon actual proof of negligence by the party or parties believed responsible, can help with the financial burdens that typically accrue from serious accidents.
