What are the types of paternity testing?

There are many reasons why establishing a biological relationship is important. This comes into play when the mother believes a man is the father of her child.

Most men never have to go through the paternity testing process; however, some find themselves in this position for one reason or another. Fortunately, this is a simple process that can be completed in a number of ways.

When it comes to testing during pregnancy, there are three options to consider:

— Non-invasive prenatal paternity. This is the most accurate way to establish paternity before a child is born. The only thing required is a blood sample from the alleged father and mother. If completed after the eighth week of pregnancy, this test is nearly 100 percent accurate.

— Amniocentesis. This test takes place during the second trimester, with a doctor drawing amniotic fluid for testing.

— Chorionic Villus Sampling. Also known as CVS, this procedure entails a doctor inserting a tube or needle into the vagina to collect chorionic villi. This test is often completed somewhere between the 10th and 13th week of pregnancy.

Nobody wants to find him or herself in this position, but if there are questions regarding paternity, it is important for the appropriate test to be completed at the right time. With these three types of paternity tests, it is simple for both parties to get a concrete answer without delay.

Anybody who is involved in a paternity battle may want to learn more about these tests, while also consulting with an attorney who knows more about the legal side of things.
